The next morning, Hugh texts me and Candice while we’re talking about our plans for the day. He says that a colleague offered him tickets to an opera tonight. Exclusive box seats at a historic opera house. He wants to know if we want to go.

Candice and I look at each other in surprise over the kitchen counter.

“I’ve never been to an opera,” I tell her.

“Me either. I don’t know if it’s my thing or not, but it might be fun. Dressing up and sitting in the fancy box seats and everything."

"Yeah. That’s what I was thinking too. So you want to do it?”

“I think so. Is that okay with you? You’re not going to stay home, are you?”

I can’t help but be gratified that she looks so worried I won’t be going with them. “Yes, if y’all want me to go, I’d love to go too. I’m not sure I have anything good to wear, but I can figure something out.”

Candice is smiling, already typing her reply to her dad. “We’ll go shopping today!”

I start to object, but it’s actually a good idea. I’ll feel better if I pick something out specifically for the opera, and I’m making so much money this summer I can spare a little to buy a nice outfit.

I glance down at my phone when Candice’s reply to the group text comes through.

We want to go! Can we buy outfits?

“Oh, I was going to pay for mine.”

“Why would you? Dad will probably pay. It’s part of the job.”

“But—” I cut off my words when Hugh’s response shows up on my phone.

Yes, of course. Stop by the office and pick up a credit card before you go shopping.

Candice is smiling, like his text just proved her point.

I’m at a loss for words.

Then Hugh follows up with another text. Make sure Danielle puts her outfit on the card too. It’s part of the job.

Candice giggles, and I groan with resignation.

Maybe I should put up more of a fight, but I don’t.

If Hugh wants to buy me a dress as part of my role as his daughter’s chaperone, then I guess I’ll let him.
